Wicked Easy Yogurt - day 4

This recipe comes from one of my co-workers. I will make it again for sure!

Supplies needed: 1 gallon of milk, 1 small plain Greek yogurt, cheesecloth (a fine strainer may do the trick)

  • Pour milk in pot and heat to 190 degrees, whisk as heating.

  • Cool to 120 degrees (I place the pot in a larger bowl with cool water running into the bowl until it reached temperature)

  • Add yogurt

  • Place in a container, then I put it in one of the kids insulated lunch boxes. My friend says she uses a cold/hot bag

  • Place it in the oven overnight

  • In the morning pour onto cheesecloth and let drain 2-4 hours

  • Stir & refrigerate.

I typically do not care for plain yogurt but I liked this. Just had to add some granola to spice it up a bit. Next time around I may try to flavor it. Anyone have any experience with this? I could use a little direction. I am also curious as to how long it is good for?

I make my yogurt this way and it keeps for longer than store-bought. I can go at least a few weeks before it turns. I've never added any flavor to the batch, but I do flavor my personal servings. A spoonful of honey is my favorite, but a little fruit of any kind can sweeten it up.

I put mine in a cooler with a couple of jars of boiled water for abut 6-8 hours - the longer you leave it the more sour it is (but it should be firm - jello jiggly). The kids like it with a touch of vanilla and sugar, I put some jam or jelly in mine for flavoring.

That looks easy! I always thought it sounded interesting but thought it was much harder than that. Can't wait to give it a try. Thanks for posting.

My mom used to make goat milk yogurt and I think she flavored it before.

How long does it stay good?

i don't keep mine past 2-3 weeks, but it does not last that long anyway. you can also incubate yogurt in a dehydrator that has a thermostat- like an Excalibur

sometimes i toss a vanilla pod into the milk while heating it and finish it with splenda, i'm sure stevia would be nice as well. its also nice with your own fruit preserves or jam mixed in.

home made yogurt is amazing :o)

I love homemade yogurt! We flavor ours by stirring in honey sometimes, other times by mixing in pureed and strained fruit or even a bit of homemade jam. Yum!
