Winter Blues

Come this time of year I am really missing going out in the back yard and picking some fresh greens for dinner.

So I throw some seeds (alfalfa, broccoli) in my bioset, add a little water...

and I have sprouts to put on my store bought greens and to top sandwiches with.
I bought this a year or two? ago from Johnny's for right around $16. Well worth it! They are up to $20 now or they have a kit that goes for $30 that comes with several types of sprout seeds.
Just a thought....they are not for everyone. I bought 2 of these for my two besties and I've yet to hear of either of them ever using it.
What can I say? So I'm easily excited. In Maine the winters are long and we all have our things we do to help us cope. I have been drooling though seed catalogs and will soon be placing an order and cooking lots. This time of year I could easily convert this blog to a cooking blog and really just enjoying the laziness of winter! Warm wood stove fires burning, playing games with the kids, reading good books, lounging with my laptop and I must admit I've even watched some tv.
What are some things you do to get through the winter blues?

A few links to end with (for my recall and you of course)
Giant Craft Stick Snow Flakes at Crafty Nest - going to make these with the kids sometime soon.
Parmesan Garlic Popcorn from Tammy's Recipes - tasty popcorn the whole family loved, will make again.

Making Lacto Fermented Mayonnaise by Cheeseslave - add to my "I want" to make list.

Well, that's just cool! I think I'd really like one of those. The jar system isn't working so well for me. They're so small that I forget they're there and forget to rinse them ... Not good.

Winter's a hard time for me. I seem to be genetically predisposed to having very difficult winters. We're saving up and next year we're going to get one of those sunlight lamps to see if that helps.

Right now though, I use winter as a time to prepare for the next year - gardens, chickens, and goats. That keeps me going.

A previous co-worker of Ol' Bucks said you all got a lot of snow up that way a little bit back, something like 24 inches? The Maine winters are beautiful to see, but hard to get through sometimes due to the length of it. I know what you mean;)

I am not a fan of sprouts, but my youngest and Ol' Buck love them! Pretty neat contraption you have there;) Have a good week Country Girl:)

I do the same in wintertime - drooling through seeds catalogs and planning for the summer garden.

I just got a batch of sprouts started this morning. I have an "Easy Sprout" system (I think this is it: http://www.sproutpeople.com/devices/ez/easysprout.html)
My family has long sprouted moong beans by soaking them for a day or two, rinsing, and then tying them up in cheesecloth or an old pillowcase to hang for another few days. I used to love seeing the sprouts poke through the cloth.

My problem now is the lack of humidity in the winter - in the past, sprouting was a summer thing. So the sprout system container works for me, and goes a long way to keep me somewhat sane during the winter. This week it is lentils, moong, and adzuki. The thought of something freshly grown/harvested is quite a mood lifter.

This post neatly sums up the difference between us. While you, on a boring winter's day, take the opportunity to grow alfalfa sprouts...I spent the day doodling faces on my Band-Aid. The world would be a better place if we were more like you. Hugs!
