In the barn

I have not talked much about the animals this winter. The theme of my blog has wandered off onto the food topic. Imagine that! What can I say, I love to cook and it is so nice to have the time to do so. However, with Spring creeping upon us the laziness of winter will soon be just a blur. Throughout the winter we kept a couple dozen Rhode Island red hens, the mean rooster "Bob". I have told a few tales about him on face book but don't think I've ever shared them here. Basically he has it out for me! Has anyone ever been taken out by spurs? I never would have guessed how painful they were until experiencing it first hand. If my boy didn't get an incubator for Christmas I assure you he would have been sizzling in my crock pot. Now I am forced to carry a weapon (ski pole/rake) with me at ALL times when they are free ranging or whenever I go into the coop for feedings. Weapon or not I have learned never to take my eyes off him. Not sure what I ever did to deserve this?

Sorry about the tangent.....where was I? 2 dozen RR hens, 1 nasty rooster, 3 Khaki Campbell's, several Muscovies which we had intentions of eating but their just too sweet. They do serve their purpose here because I really do love cooking with duck eggs! A few free ranging rabbits in the barn. We were suppose to eat them too but Maine Man hates killing them. I must admit they are tasty. We also have 2 pigs, one is ours and the other we are raising for a friend.

Soon to come.......COWS!!! HOW EXCITING? I've been dreaming about this for a couple years but this year I am sure it is going to happen. Not sure what we will get.....I want Dexters and MM wants Highland Cattle. It may be neither....we will soon see.

Yay cows!! I can't wait to see pics. and to hear how it all goes. My husband and I have always wanted them. I can't wait to hear all about it.

My blog has seemed to take a turn off of the animals and simple life as well. I love all of it.

I have no experience with roosters, but I know from animal experience that you have to show that rooster who's boss! LOL Wait for a particulary crappy day when your mood is not so good, sneak up on the little sucker and bellow at him at the top of your lungs. It will give him a start and maybe he'll think twice before attacking you again. Than again, that may scar the little guy for life. Okay, the ski pole is sounding much better now. LMAO!

Muscovies are really awesome ducks. I've got two males and 6 females They should start laying here really soon.

I Love the Dexter Cows. I'm working on getting some soon for my farm.

OH by the way, on that rooster, Catch him up one evening and file those spur points flat so they aren't so sharp. I don't have any trouble makers, but I've done it before with some of my previous nasty rooster. You will have to keep an eye on them and evey time they get sharp again, file them back down.

Rooster spurs sure are little weapons. A friend of mine used to have this mean rooster chase anybody and everything around, 'till one day he gave it a good kick like a football! It never bothered anyone when he was around after that. Not that I'm advocating kicking roosters mind you! Need to find a rooster expert somewhere.. We hope to get "one" this year too.

LOL...

I'm so glad I came by.

Sounds like we have some common threads in life...and I thought I had the meanest rooster in America. He body slams me, flies at me right out of the coop doorway, and finally one day I was out there with a full gallon jug of water to fill the feeder when he launched at me, and without even thinking, I whirled around and knocked him clear across the chicken run. lol He sat there for a minute and got up and started posturing and I stepped towards him again, holding that water jug in front of me like a shield...I yelled at him and stomped and he backed off.
We now seem to have an understanding.

I can't wait to get back and read more of your blog...

Keep talking about spring. I need the encouragement! I did get a bag of seed starter and some peat pots this weekend, so I'm thinking about starting, which makes me think about spring. COWS! wooHOO! These are for eating? Pick ugly ones, it may make it easier!

Try taking a spray bottle of water
with you when you are around the mean rooster. Set the bottle on stream and every time he comes close shoot him. It has worked on mine and maybe it will on yours.
