Grocery Shopping

On Christmas Eve I went out behind the barn and dug up a couple rows of carrots. Enough to fill two large bowls. They were under at least 6 inches of snow but the ground had yet to freeze. It would have been a whole lot easier to dig up a month or so ago but....I didn't. I had it with picking and processing, thought about mulching the beds but I didn't. Little more work but it still beats buying a bag at the grocery store!

One of my goals for next year is to get my arms around the basics of a winter garden. Seeing the possibilities and the pictures such as this one makes me want to see what can be done. The taste difference of food harvested right there before the eating makes such a difference in what I've experienced at other times of the year - I'm sure it is the same in winter, and all the more valuable.

Oh, the taste! It hurts to buy a tomato in the store now, after eating them off my plant. They taste like nothing.
