Sad to say

Sadly, Oreo has passed. He was not doing well last night and I called the vet around 9pm. He seemed to come around a bit after tending to him for a bit. I brought him to th vet this morning for his rumenotomy and he passed just before going to surgery. They called and asked if they could do an autopsy free of charge. I agreed and they are going to take pictures of what they find (I left my camera there). We will pick him up and bury him in what I'd say is our farm graveyard. In the 1yr 1/2 we've been here we've lost 2 cats to the road and an old dog and an old cat and one sweet, mischievous baby goat. That little bugger will be missed! :(

  1. I am so sorry you lost Oreo! We recently had to put down Jethro, our old Nubian. He was crippled for a long time, but he still was enjoying life and able to get around, but he went down-hill quite quickly and we finally had to make the decision to put him down. After eleven years of loving him, we do miss him! We recently got two new baby Nubians and are enjoying the fun of having kids again!!! I know how sad you are...Oreo was beautiful and I know you loved him! I have enjoyed reading your posts...such a nice blog!!!

  11. Oh I'm so sorry, for Luke and for Oreo. But, he must have been in pain. Do you know was he able to nurse long as a baby, at least with cattle, if they are removed to soon from their mothers, the rumen never does have a chance to develop properly, the proper enzymes they need for rumination just aren't present and they have a difficult time.

He was such a doll too, beautiful markings. I hope Luke is doing OK with this - it is never easy...

  13. THANKS FOR ALL YOU COMMENTS! I REALLY DO APPRECIATE ALL THE KIND WORDS YOU SENT OUR WAY AND I WILL SHOW LUKE THE POST AND YOUR COMMENTS IN THE MORNING. BOTH THE KIDS JUST GOT THE GRIM NEWS BECAUSE WE WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FAIR AFTER SCHOOL TODAY AND THEY DID NOT ASK AND I DID NOT TELL FOR FEAR OF RUINING THEIR TIME AT THE FAIR. WE ALL HAD A CRY AND WE SPENT SOME EXTRA TIME CUDDLING ANNABELLE. SHE TOO KNEW HE WAS SICK. WE WILL MOVE ON AND LEARN FROM THIS EXPERIENCE. MY BREEDER HAS A 3 MONTH OLD WHETHER SO WE WILL BE HEADING OUT TO SEE AND POSSIBLY BUY HIM IN THE MORNING. ANNABELLE NEEDS A BUDDY!
    THANKS AGAIN! ~KIM

  16. I am so sorry about Oreo! My heart goes out to you. You've probably read this before but it is an epitaph written for a dog but I've always loved it because it sums it up so perfectly:

    Near this spot
Are deposited the Remains Of one
    who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
    Strength without Insolence,
    Courage without Ferocity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.
This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
    if inscribed over human Ashes
Is but a just tribute to the Memory of
    BOATSWAIN, A DOG.

If you need to chat, just let me know.

    Blessings,
    Lacy
