What I like most about these gorgeous chives is that they came up from last years garden.

Above is the strawberry beds that MM threatens to till in every year so I now maintain them. I think this year will be our most abundant harvest.
The greenhouse is thriving. MM has spent endless hours tending the gardens. We’ve been eating fresh goodness since the end of April starting with lettuce (several kinds) followed by beet greens, spinach, bok choy, swiss chard, broccoli and turnip.
The picture below is of a Kiwi bush. It has yet to bear fruit. Any other fellow Mainers ever grown these before? If so I’d love to hear if it will survive and/or thrive in this climate….it looks good so far! We planted them last Spring.

Pictured below is turnip grown in the greenhouse. I have several more stored in the shed refrigerator. We usually serve it mashed or roasted. We would love to hear how other’s best like to eat or serve turnip….must have recipes anyone?
I'm extremely envious of your produce already! We've barely got green breaking through the ground here. (Though, I guess since we're starting 100% from scratch this year, I shouldn't be so antsy.. but I'm ready for fresh produce from OUR GARDEN! lol)
ReplyDeleteI visited a gardener in Sidney who grew hardy kiwi. The plants were huge. He had a very strong trellising system set up for them using steel posts and wire. The were delicious, grape-sized smooth-skinned fruits, which in the inside looked like the NZ kiwis. I would plant them I were not the only one going to eat them here :-(

We have hardy kiwi at our house - male & female of course. The female is HUGE & about 5 yrs old now. Henbogle is right about having a sturdy trellising system - these girls really GROW. Ours flowered for the first time last year - no fruit though. & she's ready to burst forth this year with lots of flowers - this should be the year of the fruit! Avena Botanicals in Rockport has a huge girl growing there & she produced tons of fruit starting in 2009 - she was 7 yrs old. Good luck! Nicky
ReplyDeleteNice pictures! We have a kiwi vine but we're in Ohio though. We usually roast turnips with other vegetables (we get the turnips from a couple that go to our church).

ReplyDeleteAs for turnips, I like them raw, sliced thin, with a sprinkling of Lawry's seasoned salt.
Your crops are ahead of Mount Desert Island crops. They do look great though and it gives me hope of things to come.
ReplyDeleteMy Mom would boil roughly equal amounts of carrots and turnips together until soft. Then she would mash them together with butter, salt and pepper. Delicious!!! Still a family favorite...
