It has been a long winter but the end is near....at least I'd like to think so. Yesterday planting season began. Maine Man started onions.
This is the first winter since living here that our heat source was 100% wood.
The last couple years we ran our furnace a bit. Not much, about 100 gallons in 09' and last year we probably used about 75 gallons of oil. It is a lot of work but well worth it! I am thankful for MM who endlessly works to keep us well stocked with firewood.

It will be nice to see the kids swimming in the pool once again.
My farmer friend made this well house for me last fall. Something I will forever cherish!

Trail out to the back forty. MM takes the kids out on the sled behind the snowmobile and this is the path he takes to gather firewood. I usually go out too but this winter I have been limited to what I can do until things get straightened around with my neck. Hoping that will be soon.
My thoughts this morning echo yours. It is sunny and bright in E.Ontario but cold and windy. To cold for an asthmatic to be out.
ReplyDeleteI swept the basement woodroom until I started to wheeze, filled the woodbox upstairs until that set me off again. We have been out snow shoeing every afternoon as soon as the Mr finishes work so indoor chores have been neglected. We are in the middle of a bathroom reno so there are no electrics working in the bathroom and we can't work on it at night.
Everything seems to focus on staying warm and fed right now. Standing in front of the kitchen door I feel the warmth of the sun though! I think it's time to get more little seedies growing at my farm as well.
Thank you for sharing your winter saga. We aren't alone! ~Karen~
I'm dreaming of Spring right along with you. It has been a very cold and snowy Winter here too. Hang in there my friend
ReplyDeleteIt has snowed and lightly rained for most of the last 24 hours here on MDI on the ME coast with very little accumulation. The warmer temps of the last 2 days has caused the 30+ inches to sink a little. Lots of warmth in that sun now but the night time is going to be pretty chilly again. I was thinking tonight when I last saw bare ground and my memory said before Thanksgiving. Yes that is a long time but spring is coming in another 6 weeks or so. Enjoy that greenhouse with the wood stove. How delightful.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures! They really fit the mood.
ReplyDeleteNice pictures! I'm headed South with my parent's in 2 weeks for a family reunion in Florida and a little bit of a vacation and taking my brother, sister-in-law, niece, nephew and I think maybe my sister too to Disney World!

I love the black and white photos! How awesome will that greenhouse be with a woostove?!
ReplyDeleteI found your blog a few days ago and really enjoyed looking around. I also miss my clothesline. We heat with wood which gets clothes dry pretty quickly but isn't the same as a clothesline. Hanging the clothes up on a quiet sunny morning is one of my favorite things. Hopefully spring will be here soon!
ReplyDeleteWe have just moved to rural Nova Scotia and it's our first time with wood heat. We have an wood/oil combination furnace. Hubby is working really hard to get a good fire but we just can't keep it going much more than 3 hours without intervention, so using it throughout the night is just not possible. We have to use oil for the rest of the night but its very expensive. Any tips on keeping it going would be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful pictures. We're really wishing for springtime right now too, we still have a foot of snow and more coming down regularly.
