Open for Business

John set up the stand once again. We sold about $80 worth over the weekend. We had an honor system vegetable stand for 6 weeks during the summer taking in $50-$60/week. It was a learning experience but I think we will do again next summer. I realized quickly that selling veggies is not a huge money maker and does require some effort. I hope that as the kids get older they may take it over. It will be a good experience for them and a way to make some money. It is also nice to chat with the locals and a good way to get rid of extra produce. We also sell eggs on a regular basis when we have extra at $2.00/ dozen. We put them out in a cooler by the road with a sign. The cooler is always empty within a few hours. All these little things we do helps to pay for grain for all the critters.
We had an eventful weekend carving pumpkins and cooking the seeds....
....painting pumpkins. I am am working on a witch one, pictures to come.
Leah's ghost

I forgot to mention we sold all those chicks right after I posted the OMG we have 200 chickens post. We have 30 left that will be in the freezer in a few weeks.

  1. I am glad you are still doing this. I know you got ripped off earlier in the year. I love to buy stuff at roadsidestands and I am sure your kids will enjoy the learning experience as well.

  2. Great news on selling the chickens.

I love the fact that you have a roadside stand. I would stop in a heartbeat.

The painted pumpkins are fun. My kids do that as well. Of course, in addition to a carved one!

Oh..and just for comparison. I pay $3.50 a dozen for farm fresh eggs....

  4. I love the painted pumpkins. It looks like the stand is closer to the house, so now you will only have honorable customers. The stand looks very inviting, I would stop too!

  7. I enjoy hearing about your produce selling ventures. I hope the kids do really well with their pumpkin stand. It looks very nice with the cornstalks decorating it. I may try the eggs in a cooler by the road method of selling eggs. It would probably work well for me. Just down the road is the packing house for the family orchard and there is a lot of traffic this time a year as a result. I bet I could sell my extra eggs in no time. But first I have to get extra eggs! We've been eating (or sharing) them all so far!

  8. Warren, that rip off was just as much my fault, I left it out on a Friday night.

Frugal Mom, wow $3.50 is steep.

    Thanks Robbyn and Pine Pod.

Nita, yes we relocated. It is easier to tend the stand and greet people from time to time.

Patrice Farmer, I was starting to sweat it on the chickens and the kids do have a good time here.

Amy, you will be amazed how fast your eggs go.

  9. I love your roadside stand. We had a little table and umbrella last summer, it was fun, but we seemed to lose our ambition this year.
Your painted pumpkins are adorable. You can still eat them after Halloween!

  11. Wow! you did a good job of marketing those chicks!

The stand looks great. If I lived anywhere near you, I would definitely be a customer.

I never get tired of gathering the eggs!

  12. That looks like a good crop of pumpkins. Now my youngest is 17 and his sisters away at Uni, we don't get to make the wicked pumpkin face any longer.

  14. Sugar Creek thanks. Can I still eat them? Does it matter if there cooking pumpkins or can you just cook any type of pumpkin?

Erica & Don, we were lucky to get rid of those chicks. I hope these hold us over until spring.

Jennie, I dread the day when my kiddos are gone.
Farm Chick Paula, thanks I love the action shots too.

  15. I've never heard of a pumpkin that you couldn't eat. I think the pie ones have meatier flesh but that's the only difference that I know of.
